The two materials should therefore not be considered interchangeable. In general, Etna lava stone is suited to more uniform contemporary glazed surfaces, while Italian volcanic stone is used when a more decorative, hand-painted, or heritage-oriented surface character is required.
Each surface is individually glazed and kiln-fired at high temperature, typically around 950–1000°C / 1740–1830°F, depending on the glaze system and project requirements.
